We understand that anesthesia and surgery may be very stressful and worrisome to our clients and pets.  Our team at the Homer Veterinary Clinic will help alleviate some of the worry you may have and put your mind at ease.

We follow the most current AAHA guidelines for our anesthesia and pain management protocols to ensure your pet is receiving the best care possible.  Each patient will have a full physical examination prior to undergoing anesthesia.  Any recommended tests such as pre-surgical blood work or ECG monitoring will be performed to determine any underlying issues and help cater the anesthetic protocol. Each plan is specifically tailored to the individual patient based on the procedure, age, and situation.

Your pet will be carefully monitored by skillfully trained technician throughout the surgery.  We monitor heart rate and rhythm (ECG monitoring), respiration, oxygenation, carbon dioxide levels, blood pressure and body temperature throughout the procedure in order to prevent and minimize any complications. Your pet will be on a warming blanket to prevent hypothermia.  Our surgical patients have an IV catheter placed in case any emergency drugs are needed, and they may also receive IV fluids to maintain hydration and blood pressure.  After the procedure is complete, a technician monitors each patient until they are fully recovered.  As soon as your pet is awake, a staff member will reach out to you to let you know how your pet is doing and to answer any questions that you may have.
